Dear Surrogate,
Enclosed you will find two handouts that explain the practices of Selective Reduction and Abortion as they could potentially affect you during your Surrogacy Cycle. In recent years, Reproductive Endocrinologists have made concerted efforts to achieve successful, healthy single pregnancies; however, due to high success rates of embryo implantation with the use of Ovum Donors and Surrogates, there is the very real possibility of multiple birth pregnancies.
Selective Reduction or Abortion procedures are recommended when the Surrogate and the pregnancy have a high risk of life threatening complications. With today’s medical advances, women are able to carry twins longer and deliver healthy babies with very little risk. Women carrying three or more babies have a much greater risk of delivering prematurely and other serious complications, which increase exponentially with each additional baby.
A Surrogacy Cycle is a team effort with everyone’s physical and emotional health being considered at all times. The decision to Selectively Reduce or Abort a pregnancy during a Surrogacy Cycle is not done with out discussion between the doctor, intended parents, and the Surrogate. Alternative Conceptions ensures open and safe dialogue between the Surrogate, her Intended Parents, the doctor and his staff to make certain we reach the best decision possible.
Sincerely,
Alternative Conceptions
